What ALOS tells you

ALOS (average length of stay) is the average number of nights each booking stays. A city business hotel might average 1.5 nights while a hill-station resort averages 2.5 or more. ALOS matters because short stays cost more to serve: every new arrival means a full room clean, fresh linen, a new check-in and often a new OTA commission. Longer stays fill your calendar with fewer, more efficient bookings.

ALOS = Room nights sold ÷ Number of bookings (or check-ins)

Counting it correctly

  • Room nights: one room for one night is one room night. Two rooms for three nights is six.
  • Bookings: count each room booking once. If one guest books two rooms, count two room bookings, so the result stays in nights per room.
  • Exclude cancelled bookings and no-shows, and keep day-use rooms separate.

To count nights between two dates, use the stay nights calculator.

Worked example

Last month the hotel sold 620 room nights from 248 bookings: ALOS = 2.50 nights. The same month last year it sold 580 room nights from 264 bookings: 2.20 nights. ALOS rose 13.8%, so the hotel handled 16 fewer check-ins while selling 40 more room nights.

How to raise ALOS

  • Stay-longer offers: "Stay 3, pay less per night" or a free third-night dinner. Price the offer with the length of stay discount calculator.
  • Minimum stay on peak dates: a two-night minimum on long weekends, festivals and New Year stops one-night bookings blocking busy dates.
  • Packages with things to do: sightseeing, tea garden visits, beach activities or a workation plan with good Wi-Fi give reasons to stay longer.
  • Pre-arrival extension offers: ask guests a few days before arrival if they want to add a night at a special rate.
  • Corporate long stays: project teams and trainees can book weekly or monthly.

Watch ADR alongside ALOS. A longer stay at a deep discount may not be better; check the effect on revenue with the RevPAR calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate average length of stay for a hotel?

Divide the total room nights sold in a period by the number of bookings or check-ins in the same period. For example, 620 room nights from 248 bookings gives an ALOS of 2.5 nights.

Is a higher ALOS always better?

Usually it lowers cost per room night and reduces turnover work, but if it comes from deep discounts it can lower revenue. Track ALOS together with ADR and RevPAR.

Should I use bookings or guests to calculate ALOS?

Use room bookings or check-ins to measure nights per room. Using guest count gives guest nights instead, which is a different measure used for some tourism reports.
