Why a clear child policy matters
“Is my 7-year-old free?” is one of the most common questions families ask before booking. If the answer is unclear, or the front desk says something different from the OTA listing, you lose the booking or face an argument at check-out. A simple age-band chart with fixed charges for each meal plan solves both problems.
How the calculator works
- Free band (for example 0–5 years): no bed charge when sharing the parents’ bed; meals free or at a percentage you choose.
- Child band (for example 6–11 years): a sharing charge or an extra bed charge, plus meals at a share of the adult price, often around half.
- Older children (12 years and above): treated as adults, with the adult extra bed charge and full meal prices.
EP has no meals, CP adds breakfast, MAP adds one main meal and AP adds two. The tool builds the full chart and ready-to-use policy wording you can copy to your website, OTA listings and confirmation emails.
Setting fair numbers
- Start from cost. Food cost of a child's meal, linen and the extra bed set your floor. The food cost and menu price calculator helps with plate cost.
- Look at the market. Resorts and leisure hotels that rely on family traffic often keep young children free to stay competitive; business hotels can be stricter.
- Respect room capacity. State the maximum number of children who can share the bed, and keep within the room’s safe occupancy.
- Match every channel. Load the same age bands and charges on each OTA extranet and your booking engine.
Put it in your documents
Copy the generated wording into your house rules with the hotel policy generator, and mention it in booking confirmations. Ask for age proof only where needed and apply the policy consistently. Charges are shown without GST; GST on accommodation and food follows the usual rules, so confirm billing with your CA.

Frequently asked questions
Up to what age do children stay free in Indian hotels?
There is no fixed legal rule. Each hotel sets its own policy; many allow young children, often up to 5 years, to stay free when sharing the parents' bed. State your age bands clearly on every channel.
Should children pay full price for meals?
Many hotels charge children in the middle age band a share of the adult meal price, often around half, and charge older children as adults. Set the percentage that covers your food cost.
How do I show child rates on OTAs?
Each OTA extranet has a section for child policies and extra bed charges. Enter the same age bands and charges you publish on your website so guests see one consistent policy.
