Work backwards from bookings, not from a random budget

Many hotel owners start Google Ads with a round number such as ₹500 a day and hope for the best. A better way is to start with the number of direct bookings you want and work backwards. Four inputs decide the budget:

  • Target bookings: realistic direct bookings you want from search ads each month.
  • Website conversion rate: the share of ad clicks that complete a booking. Check your booking engine or Google Analytics for your own figure.
  • Average cost per click: what Google charges for each click on your keywords. Brand searches are usually cheap; generic searches such as "hotels in Goa" cost far more.
  • Average booking value: ADR multiplied by average nights, so you can compare cost with revenue.
Clicks needed = Target bookings ÷ Conversion rate  |  Monthly budget = Clicks × CPC  |  Cost per booking = Budget ÷ Bookings

Example

A 30-room hotel wants 30 direct bookings a month. Its website converts 2% of ad clicks and the average CPC is ₹25. It needs 1,500 clicks, so the monthly budget is ₹37,500, about ₹1,250 a day. Each booking costs ₹1,250. With an average booking value of ₹9,000, that is 13.9% of revenue, compared with ₹1,620 at an 18% OTA commission.

Making the budget work harder

  1. Run a brand campaign first so guests searching your hotel name land on your website, not an OTA ad.
  2. Use location and landmark keywords instead of very broad city terms.
  3. Send clicks to a fast mobile page with the booking engine and a WhatsApp button.
  4. Tag every link so you can see which campaign produced bookings, for example with the UTM link builder.
  5. Review search terms weekly and add negative keywords.

Treat the result as a starting estimate; actual CPCs and conversion rates change with season and competition, so adjust after the first two to four weeks of real data.

Frequently asked questions

How much should a small hotel spend on Google Ads per day?

It depends on how many bookings you want, your cost per click and your website conversion rate. Work out clicks needed from your booking target and multiply by CPC instead of picking a round number.

What is a good conversion rate for hotel Google Ads?

It varies widely by brand strength, price and website speed. Use your own booking engine data where possible and start with a conservative figure if you have no history.

Is Google Ads cheaper than paying OTA commission?

It can be when cost per booking is below the commission you pay. This calculator compares both per booking, but OTAs also bring reach, so most hotels use both.
