What a hotel GST invoice must show

A tax invoice for a hotel stay in India should carry the hotel's name, address and GSTIN, a unique serial invoice number for the financial year, the invoice date, the guest's name (and the company's name, address and GSTIN when the guest wants to claim input tax credit), the place of supply, a description of each service with its SAC code, the taxable value, the GST rate and amount (CGST + SGST, or IGST), the total and a signature. This free hotel invoice generator lays all of that out and works out nights, GST and the balance for you.

GST rates used in this invoice

  • Room accommodation (SAC 996311): 5% without input tax credit when the value is up to ₹7,500 per room per night; 18% with ITC above ₹7,500 (rates applicable from 22 September 2025). The tool checks the value per room per night after discount, including extra bed.
  • Food and beverage (SAC 996331): usually 5% for a restaurant in a hotel whose room tariffs are up to ₹7,500 — check your case with your CA.
  • Other services such as laundry are taken at 18% under SAC heading 9997.
GST = taxable value × rate · CGST = SGST = GST ÷ 2 · Balance = grand total − advance

CGST + SGST or IGST?

For hotel accommodation, the place of supply is the location of the hotel. That means a hotel normally charges CGST and SGST, even when the guest or the company is from another state. Keep the supply type on "same state" unless your CA has told you a particular supply is inter-state. A company from another state usually cannot claim the CGST and SGST charged by your hotel unless it has a GST registration in your state — this is why some companies register locally.

Tips to avoid invoice mistakes

  • Use one continuous invoice series per financial year (for example GV/2026-27/0001).
  • Collect the company's GSTIN at check-in, not at check-out — use our guest registration card for this.
  • Do not apply 18% to all rooms just because some rooms are above ₹7,500 — the slab is per room per night.
  • Cross-check totals with the hotel GST calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What is the GST rate on hotel rooms in India?

From 22 September 2025, room tariffs up to Rs 7,500 per room per night attract 5% GST without input tax credit, and tariffs above Rs 7,500 attract 18% with input tax credit.

Should a hotel charge IGST to a guest from another state?

Usually no. For hotel accommodation the place of supply is the location of the hotel, so CGST and SGST are normally charged. Confirm special cases with your CA.

Is this invoice format valid for GST?

It includes the details a GST tax invoice normally needs, but it is a template only. Verify rates, numbering and format with your CA before use.
