How a Wi-Fi QR code works

A Wi-Fi QR code stores your network name, password and security type in a standard text format (WIFI:T:WPA;S:network;P:password;;). When a guest points the camera at it, the phone reads the details and offers to join the network — no typing of long passwords, no spelling mistakes and fewer calls to the front desk. The built-in camera app on iPhone (iOS 11 and later) and on most Android phones (Android 10 and later, or Google Lens) reads these codes directly.

This free generator builds the code entirely in your browser. Your password is not sent anywhere.

Where to place Wi-Fi QR cards in a hotel

  • Guest rooms — on the bedside table, desk or inside the welcome folder.
  • Reception and lobby — a small standee at the front desk.
  • Restaurant, café and pool area — on table tents if those areas use a different network.
  • Banquet and conference halls — for meeting and event guests.

Good practice for hotel Wi-Fi

  • Keep a separate guest network, away from your billing, CCTV and PMS network.
  • Use WPA2 or WPA3 security. WEP is outdated and easy to break.
  • If you change the password every few months, reprint the cards the same day — an old card is worse than no card.
  • Pair the card with a printed password for guests whose camera cannot scan.
  • Mention Wi-Fi in your welcome letter and in your WhatsApp check-in message.

Special characters in passwords

Characters such as semicolon, comma, colon, quote and backslash have a special meaning in the Wi-Fi QR format. The generator adds the required backslash before them automatically, so passwords like Stay;2026 still work. If the SSID is hidden, tick the hidden network option so phones know to search for it.

Frequently asked questions

Does a Wi-Fi QR code work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. The camera app on iPhone with iOS 11 or later and most Android phones from Android 10 onwards read Wi-Fi QR codes directly. Older Android phones can use Google Lens or a QR scanner app.

Is my Wi-Fi password safe in this tool?

The QR code is created inside your browser and nothing is uploaded or saved. Anyone who scans the printed card can join the network, so use a separate guest network.

What happens if I change my Wi-Fi password?

The old QR code stops working. Generate a new code with the new password and replace the printed cards.
