Corridors, staircases, lobbies and outdoor areas in a hotel are often lit for most of the day and night. Old tube lights, halogen spots and incandescent or CFL bulbs use far more power than LED fittings that give similar light. Because a lighting change needs little more than an electrician and a weekend, the payback is often quick. How to fill in the rows
- Fixtures: count each area separately. Corridors and outdoor lights matter most because they burn the longest.
- Old watts: read the rating on the lamp or fitting. For tube lights with old chokes, actual draw can be higher than the lamp rating.
- LED watts: take the wattage of the LED you plan to buy, matching the light output (lumens) rather than just the wattage.
- Hours per day: be realistic. Guest room lights run only a few hours; corridor lights may run 24 hours.
- LED cost each: include fitting cost if the old fixture must be replaced, not just the bulb.

How much electricity does switching to LED save?
It depends on the old lamps. Replacing a 40 W tube with an 18 W LED batten saves 22 W per fitting, and replacing a 50 W halogen with a 7 W LED saves 43 W. Multiply by hours of use and number of fittings to get the units saved.
Which hotel lights should I replace first?
Start with lights that run the longest, such as corridors, staircases, parking and outdoor lights. They give the fastest payback.
Does LED lighting reduce AC costs too?
Older lamps release more heat, so LEDs can slightly reduce cooling load in air-conditioned spaces. The effect is usually small and is not included in this calculator.
