Why photos decide most OTA bookings
On Booking.com, MakeMyTrip, Agoda and Airbnb, guests look at photos before they read a single word. Your first photo appears in search results, and the next few decide whether a guest scrolls on or opens your rates. A complete, well-ordered gallery also raises your listing content score, which supports your ranking. This free OTA photo checklist builds a shot list for your property type and room types, in the order you should upload them.
How to shoot hotel photos on a budget
- Light is everything. Open curtains, switch on every light and shoot in the morning or late afternoon. Avoid harsh midday sun.
- Stand in the corner. For rooms, shoot from the corner near the door at chest height. It shows the full room and makes it look natural, not stretched.
- Keep it level. Vertical lines (walls, door frames) should be straight. Turn on the grid on your phone camera.
- Declutter. Hide remotes, wires, bins, slippers and staff items. Make the bed tight with white linen.
- Use landscape. OTAs display mostly horizontal photos. Keep a few portrait shots for Instagram stories.
- Hire a professional if you can. A one-day shoot often pays for itself through better conversion, but a recent smartphone with these tips works well for smaller homestays.
The right order
- Your strongest image — a view, the pool or your best room.
- The best room type, then every other room type.
- Bathrooms (guests check these closely).
- Food, restaurant and facilities.
- Exterior, location and neighbourhood.
After you upload
Tag each photo with the correct room type in the extranet so it appears on the right rate plan. Then check the rest of your listing with the OTA listing score checker and refresh your text with the hotel description generator. Update the gallery after every renovation — guests notice when photos do not match the room, and they say so in reviews.

Frequently asked questions
How many photos should a hotel have on Booking.com or MakeMyTrip?
Aim for at least 25 to 40 good photos, with 4 to 6 for every room type you sell, plus bathrooms, food, facilities and the exterior. Quality and order matter more than sheer number.
Should OTA photos be landscape or portrait?
Use landscape (horizontal) photos for OTAs because galleries and search results display them best. Keep portrait shots for Instagram stories and reels.
Can I add my logo or watermark to OTA photos?
No. Most OTAs do not accept photos with watermarks, logos, text or borders and may remove them. Upload clean, unedited-looking images.
