Why seasonal pricing matters in India

Demand at most Indian hotels moves sharply through the year. A Goa beach resort is busiest from November to January, a Darjeeling or Manali hotel peaks in summer holidays and the Puja season, and a business hotel in Bengaluru or Gurugram is busiest on weekdays outside the holiday months. One flat rate all year leaves money on the table in peak months and empty rooms in low months. A clear seasonal rate grid gives your team and channel manager a starting point for every date.

Season rate = Base rate × (1 + season %); Weekend rate = Season rate × (1 + weekend %)

How to set the seasons

  • Peak: months when you regularly run very high occupancy and could have sold more rooms.
  • Shoulder: good demand, but you still need to work for it.
  • Normal: your base rate months.
  • Low: monsoon, exam months or off-season, when rate cuts and packages are needed to fill rooms.

Use last year's occupancy and ADR by month to decide which months fall where; the ADR calculator and occupancy rate calculator help you build that history.

Worked example

Base weekday rate ₹4,000, weekend premium 15% on Friday and Saturday, peak +40%, shoulder +15%, low −20%, three months each. Peak weekday ₹5,599 and weekend ₹6,399; low weekday ₹3,199 and weekend ₹3,699. With rates rounded to end in 99, the simple annual average published rate is about ₹4,535.

Using the grid well

  • It is a base, not a cage. Layer daily changes on top for long weekends, festivals and local events.
  • Check GST slabs. If a peak rate goes just above ₹7,500, GST moves from 5% to 18%. Check the guest's total with the hotel GST calculator before you publish.
  • Load all seasons in advance. Put the full year into your channel manager so OTAs and your website always show the right rate.
  • Review twice a year. Compare actual results with the grid and move months between seasons when demand changes.

Frequently asked questions

What is shoulder season in hotels?

Shoulder season is the period between peak and low season, when demand is moderate. Rates are usually set between peak and normal levels, and offers are used more selectively.

How much higher should peak season rates be?

It depends on your market and how full you run. Many hotels test peak premiums in steps and raise them further when they sell out early, but the right level comes from your own booking data.

Should weekend rates be higher than weekday rates?

For leisure hotels and resorts, usually yes. Business hotels often see the opposite pattern, so they may set lower weekend rates. Enter a minus weekend premium for that.
