How to size a DG set for a hotel

A diesel generator that is too small trips the moment the lifts and ACs start together; one that is too large burns diesel at light load and suffers from wet stacking. The right size starts from the connected load of everything the DG must back up, then applies a realistic diversity factor, because not every AC, geyser and kitchen appliance runs at the same moment.

  1. List the load per room: AC, lights, TV, fridge and geyser. Use the name-plate kW where possible.
  2. Add common area lighting, kitchen, lifts, water pumps and the STP blowers.
  3. Apply a diversity factor. Hotels commonly use 50 to 70%; a resort in a hot region at full occupancy will sit at the higher end.
  4. Convert kW to kVA by dividing by the power factor, normally 0.8 for DG ratings.
  5. Add headroom for motor starting current and future expansion, then choose the next standard kVA rating.
kVA = (Connected kW × Diversity %) ÷ Power factor  |  DG size = next standard rating above kVA × (1 + headroom)

Worked example

A 40-room hotel at 2 kW per room has 80 kW in rooms plus 53.5 kW of common, kitchen, lift and pump load: 133.5 kW connected. At 60% diversity the running load is 80.1 kW, which is 100.1 kVA at 0.8 PF. With 20% headroom it needs about 120 kVA, so a 125 kVA set is the next standard size.

Practical points

  • DG sets run most efficiently at roughly 60 to 80% load. Two smaller sets can suit properties with big day and night load swings.
  • Decide whether all AC load must be backed up. Many hotels back up only rooms and essentials, which cuts the size sharply.
  • Check rules on acoustic enclosures, stack height and emission norms with your state pollution control board.

Once you pick a size, estimate running cost with the DG diesel consumption calculator and schedule servicing with the hotel maintenance checklist generator. This tool gives a planning estimate only; always confirm the load study and DG rating with a qualified electrical engineer.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert kW to kVA for a DG set?

Divide kW by the power factor. DG sets are rated at 0.8 PF, so 80 kW of running load needs 100 kVA. Add headroom for motor starting before choosing the size.

What diversity factor should a hotel use?

Many hotels use 50 to 70% of connected load, but it depends on climate, occupancy and how much AC load is backed up. Your electrical engineer should confirm it from actual load readings.

Can I run a DG set at very low load?

Running a diesel generator below about 30% load for long periods can cause carbon build-up and wet stacking. Size it so normal running load sits around 60 to 80%.
