Why room attendants need a checklist

A clean room is the single biggest driver of guest reviews, and most cleanliness complaints come from small things that were missed — hair in the drain, a dusty headboard, a missing toilet roll, a used cup on the tea tray. A printed checklist makes every room follow the same standard, whichever attendant cleans it, and gives supervisors a quick way to inspect. This free housekeeping checklist generator builds a printable checklist for the room type, areas and cleaning type you choose, with tick boxes and a supervisor sign-off.

Three cleaning types

  • Check-out (departure) room — full clean after the guest leaves: strip and remake the bed, full towel change, wardrobe and safe check, lost and found search, minibar count.
  • Stay-over (occupied) room — daily service while the guest is staying: tidy without moving valuables, make the bed, replace towels left on the floor, replenish amenities.
  • Deep clean — periodic work done room by room on a schedule: rotate mattress, wash curtains, shampoo carpets, descale fittings, clean AC grills and walls.

How to use the checklist

  1. Print one sheet per room per shift, or laminate it and use a dry-erase marker.
  2. The attendant ticks each task and writes remarks such as "TV remote not working".
  3. The supervisor inspects, ticks Passed or Re-clean, and passes maintenance issues to engineering.
  4. Only then is the room released as vacant and ready in the PMS.

Planning the team

A checkout room typically takes longer than a stay-over, and deep cleaning needs a separate time slot. Work out how many attendants you need with the housekeeping staffing calculator, plan linen stock with the linen par calculator, and turn this checklist into a full procedure with the hotel SOP generator.

Review the checklist every few months with your supervisors. Add tasks that come up repeatedly in guest feedback and remove steps that no longer apply to your rooms.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a check-out and a stay-over clean?

A check-out clean is a full clean after the guest leaves, with a fresh bed and full towel change. A stay-over clean is a lighter daily service while the guest is still staying.

How often should hotel rooms be deep cleaned?

Many hotels deep clean each room every one to three months on a rotating schedule, and more often in busy or humid locations. Plan it in low-occupancy periods.

Can I edit the checklist tasks?

Yes. Download the Word file and add, remove or reword tasks to match your own room standards.
