What makes a hotel headline work

Headlines appear everywhere in hotel marketing: Google Ads, the title of a Google Business post, an Instagram reel cover, the first line of an OTA description and the hero banner on your website. A guest scrolling on a phone gives each one a second or two. In that time the headline has to say where you are, why it is worth a look and why it is believable. This checker scores up to three headlines against six simple rules and tells you exactly what to fix.

Score = Length (25) + Location (20) + Benefit (20) + Number (10) + Power word (15) + Clean format (10)

The six rules explained

  • Length 30 to 60 characters: long enough to say something useful, short enough not to be cut off in ads, search results and phone screens.
  • Location: people search by place. "Homestay in Kalimpong" beats "Lovely homestay" because it matches what the traveller typed.
  • Benefit: a concrete reason to choose you, such as a view, breakfast, pool, parking or distance to a landmark.
  • Number: numbers stand out and add proof: "5 minutes from the beach", "24 rooms", "rated 4.6 on Google" (only if true).
  • Power word: one emotional word such as unwind, cosy, heritage or escape adds feeling. More than three starts to sound like an advertisement.
  • Clean format: no ALL CAPS, no "!!!", and no claims like "best" or "No.1" that you cannot prove. Ad platforms often reject them and guests do not trust them.

From score to better headline

Take the winning headline, apply the suggested fixes, and score the new version again. Then test two versions for real: run them as two ads with the same budget, or change your Google Business post title for two weeks each, and compare clicks or enquiries. Writing scores help you avoid weak headlines; real testing tells you which strong headline your guests prefer.

Frequently asked questions

What is the ideal length for a hotel headline?

Around 30 to 60 characters works for most uses. It fits Google Ads and search titles without being cut and is still easy to read on a phone.

Why does the checker penalise words like best or No.1?

These are claims that cannot be proven, guests tend to ignore them and many ad platforms restrict them. A specific fact such as a review rating or a distance is more convincing.

Does a high score guarantee more bookings?

No. The score checks that a headline follows good writing practice. Which version actually brings more clicks and enquiries can only be found by testing with real guests.
