How the review score maths works
Your rating is a simple average: the total of all review scores divided by the number of reviews. Every new review pulls the average towards its own score, but the pull gets weaker as your review count grows. That is why a new hotel can jump from 3.9 to 4.4 in a month, while a property with 1,000 reviews moves very slowly.
Example: 180 reviews averaging 4.1 out of 5, target 4.5. Each new 5-star review sits 0.5 above the target, and you are 0.4 below it across 180 reviews. So you need 180 × 0.4 ÷ 0.5 = 144 new 5-star reviews, with no lower ones in between. If new reviews average 4.8 instead, you need 240.
What the result tells you
- Volume matters as much as quality. The table shows how fast the number climbs when new reviews are not perfect. A steady flow of good reviews beats a few great ones.
- One bad review is expensive. The note under the result shows how many top-score reviews it takes to undo one 1-star review. Fixing the cause of complaints is cheaper than chasing extra reviews.
- Perfect scores are not realistic. Once you have any lower review, a full 5.0 or 10 can never be reached. Set a target like 4.6 or 9.0.
How to grow your score the right way
- Fix the top two complaints in your recent reviews first — usually cleanliness, check-in delay, Wi-Fi or hot water.
- Ask every guest for an honest review at check-out. A Google review QR code at the front desk makes it easy.
- Reply to every review, good and bad. Our review reply generator drafts polite replies in seconds.
- Never pay, give discounts or offer gifts for reviews, and never ask only happy guests. Google, Booking.com and other platforms prohibit this and can remove reviews or penalise listings.
Remember that each platform calculates and rounds a little differently. Some give more weight to recent reviews or drop very old ones, so treat this calculator as a guide to the effort required, not an exact forecast.

Frequently asked questions
How many 5-star reviews do I need to go from 4.1 to 4.5?
It depends on how many reviews you have. With 180 reviews you need 144 new 5-star reviews and no lower ones. With 50 reviews you need 40. The calculator works it out for your numbers.
Why does my rating move so slowly?
The rating is an average of all reviews. The more reviews you already have, the less each new review changes the average, so large properties need many reviews to move by even 0.1.
Can I offer a discount to guests who leave a review?
No. Google, Booking.com, TripAdvisor and other platforms do not allow incentives for reviews. Ask every guest politely for an honest review instead.
