What decides your position on an OTA
Booking.com, MakeMyTrip, Goibibo, Agoda and Expedia all sort search results with their own ranking algorithms. None of them publish the full formula, but they all want the same thing: to show guests the properties most likely to be booked and not cancelled. That means three groups of signals matter — how good your listing looks, how competitive your price and availability are, and how guests react (conversion and reviews). This free checklist scores eleven factors out of 100 and lists the fixes that will move your score most.
How the score works
Rate competitiveness, content, availability and review score carry the biggest weights because they affect both ranking and conversion. Smaller items, like programme participation, can help but cost extra commission, so they are weighted lower. Fixes are sorted by points lost, so start at the top of the list.
Quick wins most Indian hotels miss
- Stop-sells on popular room types. Closing a room type removes you from many searches. Raise the rate instead of closing.
- Rate leaks. If a wholesaler or another OTA shows a lower price, the OTA may push you down or match the price at your cost. Use the rate parity checker every week.
- Half-empty listings. Missing facilities, room sizes or policies lower your content score. Check it with the OTA listing score checker.
- Slow replies. Unanswered messages and reviews hurt trust and conversion.
- Only non-refundable rates. Many guests filter for free cancellation. Offer both.
Track it monthly
Run this checklist once a month and compare scores. Watch your OTA analytics too: search views, page views and conversion. If views are high but bookings are low, work on price, photos and reviews. If views are low, work on availability, promotions and content. Commission level also affects visibility on most platforms — see what it really costs with the OTA commission calculator.

Frequently asked questions
What is the most important OTA ranking factor?
No single factor decides ranking, but price competitiveness, availability, content completeness and reviews carry the most weight on most OTAs because they drive conversion.
Does a higher commission improve OTA ranking?
Programmes like visibility boosters or preferred partner status usually increase exposure in exchange for higher commission. Test for a fixed period and measure extra room nights against the extra cost.
How often should I check my OTA listing?
Check rates and parity weekly and run a full listing review monthly. Update photos and content whenever you renovate or add facilities.
