Why register with the tourism department?
Most Indian states let hotels, homestays and guest houses register with the state tourism department. In some states registration is compulsory before you can operate; in others it is voluntary but unlocks benefits such as listing on the state tourism website, eligibility for incentive schemes, and for homestays, concessional electricity or water tariffs. Registered properties also find it easier to work with travel agents, government bookings and OTAs that ask for proof of a legal business.

Homestay schemes are different
Homestay and bed-and-breakfast schemes are built around a family hosting guests in their own home. Common conditions include:

- Basic standards for cleanliness, bathrooms, drinking water and safety.
