Plan the whole trip budget in one place

Hotel prices are only part of what a holiday costs. Flights or train tickets, cabs, meals, entry tickets and small extras often add up to more than the stay itself. This trip cost calculator brings every major expense together so you can see the total budget and the share per person before you book, whether it is a family weekend in the hills, a friends' trip to Goa or a pilgrimage.

Total = (Hotel + GST + Travel + Local transport + Food + Activities) × (1 + Buffer %)  |  Per person = Total ÷ Travellers

How each line is worked out

  • Hotel: rate per room per night × rooms × nights. GST is added at 5% for tariffs up to ₹7,500 per room per night and 18% above that, unless the quoted rate already includes tax.
  • Travel to and from: the total for the whole group, such as all flight or train tickets.
  • Local transport and food: counted for nights + 1 days, since a 3-night trip usually covers 4 days of travel and meals.
  • Activities: sightseeing, entry tickets, boat rides, adventure sports and guides.
  • Buffer: 10% is a sensible cushion for tips, snacks, shopping and surprises.

Example

Four friends take a 3-night trip with 2 rooms at ₹3,000 a night. Hotel cost is ₹18,000 plus 5% GST (₹900). Add ₹12,000 for travel, ₹8,000 for local cabs over 4 days, ₹12,800 for food and ₹4,000 for activities. The subtotal is ₹55,700; with a 10% buffer the trip costs about ₹61,270, or roughly ₹15,318 per person.

Ways to cut the cost

  • Travel on weekdays or just outside peak dates; hotel rates and fares often drop.
  • Book rooms that include breakfast.
  • Share a larger room or a homestay cottage if your group is comfortable with it.
  • Hire one cab for the whole trip instead of separate rides.

Once the trip is done, settle up fairly with the hotel cost split calculator, or check exact nights and GST for your dates with the hotel nights calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the total cost of a trip?

Add hotel cost with GST, travel to and from, local transport, food for each day, activities and a buffer for extras. Divide the total by the number of travellers for the cost per person.

What GST applies to hotel rooms?

Room tariffs up to ₹7,500 per room per night attract 5% GST and tariffs above ₹7,500 attract 18%.

Why add a buffer?

Trips almost always include unplanned spending such as tips, snacks, shopping and price changes. A buffer of about 10% keeps the budget realistic.
