How much to tip in Indian hotels

Tipping in India is a kind gesture, not an obligation. Staff do appreciate it, especially porters, housekeeping and drivers who often work long shifts. These ranges are typical for mid-range hotels; budget properties are lower and luxury hotels higher:

  • Porter or bellboy – ₹30–50 per bag, on arrival and on departure.
  • Housekeeping – ₹50–100 per night. Leave it daily with a short note, because the room attendant can change during your stay.
  • Room service – ₹30–50 per delivery.
  • Restaurant – 5–10% of the bill if no service charge is added.
  • Hotel driver or local guide – ₹200–500 per day, depending on hours and the quality of help.
  • Concierge – ₹100–200 when they arrange something special, such as a hard-to-get reservation.

Service charge on restaurant bills

Under the Central Consumer Protection Authority guidelines issued in 2022, restaurants and hotels in India should not add a service charge automatically or by default. If you see one on the bill, you can ask for it to be removed. If you choose to pay it, you do not need to tip again on top of it.

Tipping abroad

Customs change a lot by country. In the USA, tips are expected and restaurant tips of 15–20% are normal. In Singapore, a 10% service charge is usually on the bill and extra tipping is not expected. The UAE, Thailand, the UK and much of Europe sit in between. Pick a country above to see typical ranges in local currency.

Simple tipping etiquette

  • Give the tip by hand to the person who served you, or in an envelope marked for housekeeping.
  • Keep small notes ready on arrival.
  • Use UPI only if the staff member is comfortable sharing their details.
  • A sincere review naming a helpful staff member is also valued.
