Plan your road trip budget

Weekend drives to hill stations, beaches and pilgrimage towns are a favourite way to travel in India. Fuel is usually the biggest cost, followed by tolls. This free road trip fuel cost calculator works out the litres you will need, the fuel bill, tolls and the cost per person, so you can compare driving with train or flight fares and share costs fairly.

Fuel needed (litres) = distance ÷ mileage × (1 + extra %)  |  Fuel cost = litres × price per litre

Worked example

Kolkata to a destination 350 km away, round trip, plus 60 km of local driving = 760 km. A car giving 15 km per litre with a 10% allowance for traffic and hills needs 760 ÷ 15 × 1.1 = 55.7 litres. At ₹103 per litre the fuel costs about ₹5,741. Add ₹1,200 of tolls (₹600 each way) and ₹300 for parking for a total of ₹7,241, or about ₹1,810 each for four travellers.

Getting the inputs right

  • Mileage – use your car’s real average from the trip computer or a full-tank test, not the brochure figure. Highway driving is usually better than city driving.
  • Extra % – add 10–20% for ghat roads, heavy traffic, full luggage or constant AC. Hill driving uses noticeably more fuel.
  • Fuel price – petrol and diesel prices differ by state and city. Check the current price before you leave.
  • Tolls – check your route on the NHAI or a toll app. With FASTag, some plazas charge less for a return journey within 24 hours.
  • Local driving – sightseeing at the destination often adds 50–150 km.

Saving fuel on the road

  • Keep tyres at the correct pressure and avoid heavy roof loads.
  • Drive at a steady speed; hard acceleration and braking waste fuel.
  • Start early to avoid city traffic on the way out.
  • Choose a hotel with free parking to avoid daily parking charges.

Once the drive is planned, split the stay with friends using the hotel cost split calculator and count your nights with the hotel nights calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate fuel cost for a road trip?

Divide the total distance by your car's mileage to get litres, add an allowance for traffic and hills, then multiply by the fuel price per litre. Add tolls and parking for the full trip cost.

What mileage should I use for highway driving?

Use the real average from your car's trip computer or a full-tank test. Highway mileage is usually better than city mileage, but hills, AC and full luggage reduce it.

Are tolls charged both ways?

Yes, tolls are charged in each direction. Some toll plazas give a discount on a return journey within 24 hours when you pay with FASTag.
