Why in-hand salary is lower than CTC

Cost to company (CTC) is everything the employer spends on an employee in a year. Some of it never reaches the bank account: the employer's PF contribution, any gratuity provision included in the CTC, the employee's own PF, professional tax and income tax. This calculator walks from CTC to monthly take-home for the new tax regime, which is the default for salaried employees.

Gross = CTC − Employer PF − Gratuity (if in CTC)
In-hand = Gross − Employee PF − Professional tax − Income tax with cess

New regime defaults (FY 2025-26)

  • Slabs: up to ₹4 lakh nil, ₹4-8 lakh 5%, ₹8-12 lakh 10%, ₹12-16 lakh 15%, ₹16-20 lakh 20%, ₹20-24 lakh 25%, above ₹24 lakh 30%.
  • Standard deduction for salaried employees: ₹75,000.
  • Rebate: no tax if taxable income is up to ₹12 lakh, with marginal relief just above it.
  • Health and education cess: 4% of tax.

Every number is editable, because budgets change slabs and limits. Rules change — verify with your CA/HR advisor.

Example

A front office executive has a CTC of ₹6,00,000 with basic at 50%. Employer PF at 12% of the ₹15,000 ceiling is ₹21,600 a year, so gross salary is ₹5,78,400. After the ₹75,000 standard deduction, taxable income is ₹5,03,400, which is under ₹12 lakh, so the rebate makes income tax nil. Deducting employee PF of ₹21,600 and professional tax of ₹2,400 gives ₹5,54,400 a year, or ₹46,200 a month in hand.

Tips for hotel employers

  • Show the CTC and the expected monthly in-hand side by side in offer letters; it avoids disappointment in the first month.
  • If you provide meals or accommodation, explain whether they are part of CTC.
  • Keep basic at a sensible share of pay; under the labour codes, wages for PF and gratuity are generally expected to be at least half of total pay.
  • Professional tax rates and slabs depend on the state; some states have none.
  • Payroll is usually a hotel's biggest cost; plan it in your hotel budget.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate in-hand salary from CTC?

Subtract employer PF and any gratuity included in the CTC to get gross salary. Then subtract employee PF, professional tax and income tax with cess. Divide by 12 for the monthly figure.

Is there any tax on a CTC of 12 lakh in the new regime?

Usually not for salaried employees. After the 75,000 rupee standard deduction, taxable income up to 12 lakh gets a full rebate in FY 2025-26. Verify the current rules with your CA.

Is professional tax deductible in the new tax regime?

No. Professional tax is still deducted from salary where your state levies it, but it cannot be claimed as a deduction under the new regime.
