Split group trip costs fairly
On a group trip one friend books the hotel, another pays for cabs and someone else picks up dinner. By the end nobody is sure who owes what. This calculator records each expense, who paid it and who shared it, then works out every person's fair share and the smallest set of payments that settles everything.
Balance = Amount paid − Fair share
Positive balance = gets money back; negative balance = owes money
How the settlement works
Instead of everyone paying everyone, the tool matches people who owe with people who are owed. It also looks for smaller groups whose balances cancel out exactly, so the total number of payments is as low as possible. All amounts are calculated to the paisa, so the payments always add up exactly to each person's balance.
Tips for using it
- Enter each name once at the top. Unused name boxes stay hidden in the expense rows.
- Tick only the people who shared an expense. If two friends went paragliding, tick just those two.
- Split a mixed bill into two rows if part of it was for everyone and part for only some people.
- Add advances or deposits as an expense paid by the person who paid them.
- Copy the settlement summary into the group chat so everyone agrees before money moves.
Example
Four friends spend ₹12,000 on the hotel, ₹3,600 on cabs and ₹2,850 on dinner, all shared by everyone, plus ₹5,000 on paragliding shared by two people. Each person's share of the common costs is ₹4,612.50, and the two who went paragliding add ₹2,500 each. The tool then shows who should pay whom, in as few payments as possible.

Frequently asked questions
How does the calculator decide who pays whom?
It works out each person's balance (paid minus share), then finds the smallest number of payments that brings every balance to zero, including groups whose balances cancel each other out.
Can an expense be shared by only some people?
Yes. In each expense row, tick only the people who shared it. The amount is split equally among them, and people who are not ticked pay nothing for that expense.
What happens with amounts that do not divide equally?
Amounts are split to the paisa. Any leftover paisa goes to the first people in the list, so the shares always add up exactly to the expense and the settlements balance.
