Hotel Booking Pace Calculator
Compare what is on the books for a future month with the same day last year, and see the pickup you need to beat it.
What booking pace means
Booking pace compares how many room nights you have on the books for a future period today with how many you had on the same day last year for the same period (often called STLY). If December 2026 has 520 room nights booked 54 days out and last year you had 470 at the same point, you are pacing 10.6% ahead. Pace is the earliest warning you get: it tells you weeks in advance whether to hold rates firm or start a push.
How the projection works
The calculator gives two simple projections:
- Additive: today's room nights plus the pickup you got last year from this point to the end (last year final − STLY). Good when your inventory is close to full.
- Multiplicative: last year's final result scaled by your pace ratio. Useful when demand has genuinely grown or shrunk.
Both are capped at your capacity (rooms × nights in the month). The required pickup per day shows how many room nights a day you must add to match or beat last year — compare it with last year's daily pickup to see whether the target is realistic.
What to do with the result
- Ahead of pace: do not discount. Consider raising rates for peak dates and add minimum-stay rules on long weekends. Check where you stand against the market with the market share calculator.
- Behind pace: find out why — fewer group blocks, a new competitor, poor OTA ranking or rates out of line. Fix rate parity first using the rate parity checker, then open targeted offers rather than cutting the rate for every date.
- Track weekly. Record on-the-books numbers every Monday for the next three months so you always have an accurate same-day-last-year figure next year.
Getting good data
Use the same definition both years: confirmed room nights only, excluding tentative holds and cancelled bookings. If last year had a one-off event, a renovation or a lockdown, adjust or use the year before.
Frequently asked questions
What does STLY mean in hotel revenue management?
STLY means same time last year. It is the number of room nights, or revenue, that was on the books for the same future period on the same number of days before arrival last year.
How often should a hotel check booking pace?
Most hotels check pace weekly for the next 90 days and daily for the next two weeks. Saving a weekly on-the-books snapshot makes next year comparisons accurate.
Is being ahead of pace always good?
Mostly, but if you are ahead because rates are too low you may sell out early at a poor ADR. Check the rate you are selling at as well as the room nights.
