Why run an internal quality audit
Standards slip quietly. A missing name badge, a dusty corner under the bed or a chiller log that has not been filled for three days rarely triggers a complaint on its own, but together they lower review scores and repeat business. A monthly internal audit with a fixed checklist gives every department a score, shows trends over time and turns vague feedback into a clear list of fixes.
How the checklist works
- 80 checkpoints across 10 areas: front office, guest rooms, public areas, F&B service, kitchen, engineering, safety and security, back of house, pool and gym, and housekeeping operations. Pick only the areas your property has.
- Simple scoring: Yes = 2, Partly = 1, No = 0. Mark N/A when a point does not apply, so it does not pull the score down.
- Automatic percentages for each department and overall, with the strongest and weakest department highlighted.
- Printable report with a remarks column, so you can also print a blank checklist and score on paper during the walk-through.
Running the audit
- Audit unannounced, at a different time each month, so you see the hotel as guests do.
- Check a sample of rooms: at least one of each room type, including a recently vacated one.
- Write a short remark for every Partly or No, with the room number or location.
- Share the report with department heads within 24 hours and agree an owner and date for each fix.
- Compare scores month by month. A falling score in one department is an early warning.
Turning findings into habits
Audits only help if the fixes stick. Convert repeated findings into written procedures with the hotel SOP generator, and compare what you see with what guests say using a guest feedback form. The rating bands in this tool are an internal guide, not an official grading system; brand or classification standards may differ.

Frequently asked questions
How often should a hotel do an internal quality audit?
Many hotels audit every month and do a quick weekly walk-through. Monthly audits with the same checklist make it easy to see whether standards are improving.
How is the department score calculated?
Each checkpoint scores 2 for Yes, 1 for Partly and 0 for No. The department score is points earned divided by twice the number of applicable checkpoints, times 100. N/A items are left out.
Can I print a blank checklist?
Yes. Leave the pre-fill option on Blank, choose your departments and use Print or Download Word. The report has empty score and remarks columns for a paper audit.
