Price a holiday package without losing money
A holiday package bundles hotel nights, transport, sightseeing, a guide and smaller per-person costs such as entry tickets and meals. Travel agents and hotels that sell packages often quote from memory and then find that the profit has disappeared after taxes and small extras. This calculator adds every cost, applies your markup or target margin, adds GST and shows the final price per person.
Markup and margin are not the same
Markup is calculated on cost. Margin is calculated on the selling price. A 20% markup on a cost of ₹1,000 gives ₹1,200, which is a margin of only 16.7%. If your business plan says “20% margin”, you need a selling price of ₹1,250.
Margin method: Selling price = Cost ÷ (1 − Margin %)
Profit = Selling price before GST − Total cost
GST on tour packages
The GST on a tour operator's package depends on the option the operator chooses and how the package is billed. Commonly, operators either charge 5% on the full package value without claiming input tax credit, or 18% while claiming input tax credit on their costs. Rules and conditions can change, so treat the dropdown as a quoting aid and confirm the correct rate and invoicing method with your CA.
Tips for better package pricing
- Use the net rates you will actually pay suppliers, not their published rates.
- Add a small buffer for fuel price changes, tolls and parking if transport is quoted far in advance.
- Round the per-person price to a clean figure; it looks more professional and protects a little margin.
- Quote child and extra-adult prices separately if the hotel charges them differently.
- Check the margin figure, not just the profit in rupees, before offering a discount.
To build the cost side day by day, start with the tour package cost calculator. Hotels selling to agents can work out net rates with the travel agent net rate calculator, and you can send the final plan with the travel itinerary generator.

Frequently asked questions
What markup do travel agents add to holiday packages?
It varies by destination, competition and service level. Work out the margin you need to cover office costs and leave profit, then use the target margin method in the calculator rather than copying a fixed figure.
What is the GST rate on a tour package in India?
It depends on the option the tour operator chooses and how the package is billed, commonly 5% without input tax credit or 18% with it. Confirm the applicable rate and conditions with your CA before invoicing.
Should GST be included in my profit?
No. GST collected from the customer is paid to the government. Your profit is the selling price before GST minus your costs, which is how the calculator shows it.
