Why a turnover checklist matters

On a homestay or Airbnb, cleanliness is the thing guests mention most in reviews. One hair in the shower or a missed dustbin can cost you a star, and on most platforms ratings affect how often your listing is shown. The problem is rarely effort; it is that turnovers happen in a hurry, often by different people, and something gets missed. A written checklist used every single time fixes that.

How to use this checklist

  1. Enter the number of bedrooms and bathrooms, and whether guests use a kitchen, balcony or garden.
  2. The tool builds a room-by-room list with a restock list for the next stay.
  3. Open it on the phone of whoever is cleaning and tick each task. The progress bar shows how much is left.
  4. Or download it in Word or print it, and keep a stack of copies with the cleaning supplies.

A tick list on screen resets when the page reloads, so for a record of each turnover use the printed copy and file it, or take photos of the finished rooms.

A sensible cleaning order

  • Strip first: remove all used linen and towels and start the wash while you clean.
  • Top to bottom: dust high surfaces before wiping lower ones, and mop last.
  • Bathrooms need the most care: guests look at the toilet, drain, mirror and tiles closely.
  • Restock before you leave: toilet rolls, soap, water and tea, so the next guest finds everything ready.
  • Final walk-through: look at each room from the door, as a guest would.

Plan linen and supplies

Running out of clean sheets between back-to-back stays is a common cause of rushed turnovers. Keep at least three sets of linen per bed: one on the bed, one in the wash and one spare. The linen par calculator works out how many sets you need, and the guest amenities par calculator helps you plan monthly stock of toiletries and tea. If you charge guests a separate cleaning fee, make sure it covers this work with the cleaning fee calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a homestay turnover clean take?

It depends on size and how the guests left it, but a one-bedroom unit usually takes one to two hours for one person, plus laundry time. Time a few turnovers to set realistic check-in and check-out times.

How many sets of bed linen do I need?

Keep at least three sets per bed: one in use, one in the wash and one spare. Busy properties with back-to-back stays often keep more.

Does the tick list save my progress?

No. Ticks are only kept while the page is open. Print the checklist or download it in Word if you want a record of each turnover.
