Plan housekeeping from minutes, not guesswork

The number of room attendants you need changes every day with the mix of check-outs and stayovers. A departure room needs a full clean, fresh linen, bathroom deep clean and a thorough check for left items, so it takes much longer than a stayover tidy. This calculator turns today's room count into total workload hours and the number of attendants to roster.

Attendants needed = (Departures × minutes + Stayovers × minutes + Vacant checks × minutes) ÷ (Shift minutes − breaks − other time), rounded up

Public area cleaning is worked out separately because it is often done by a different team or a different shift.

Setting realistic minutes

  • The defaults of 35 minutes for a departure and 20 for a stayover are typical starting points only. Suites, villas, rooms with a balcony or a bathtub take longer.
  • Time several attendants over a week and use the average, not the fastest person.
  • Include time to make up extra beds, replace minibar items and report maintenance faults if your attendants do that.
  • Productive time is never the full shift. Briefings, collecting linen and supplies, waiting for lifts and walking between floors all use time, so keep the “other time” field honest.

Using the result on the floor

Share the rooms-per-attendant figure in the morning briefing and assign floors so each attendant has a similar workload, mixing departures and stayovers. If late check-outs are expected, keep one attendant flexible for the afternoon. On days with many departures and early arrivals, consider starting a second attendant earlier rather than paying overtime later.

For a monthly staffing plan with weekly offs and leave, use the housekeeping staffing calculator. Turn today's numbers into shifts with the staff duty roster generator, and track which rooms are clean, dirty or inspected with the room status report generator.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to clean a hotel room?

There is no single figure. A typical starting assumption is about 30 to 40 minutes for a departure room and 15 to 25 minutes for a stayover, but room size, bathroom type and your standards change this. Time your own team for the best estimate.

How many rooms can one room attendant clean in a shift?

Divide the attendant's productive minutes by the average minutes per room. With an 8-hour shift, 90 minutes of breaks and other time, and a mix of departures and stayovers, the answer is often in the low to mid teens.

Should supervisors be counted as room attendants?

No. Supervisors inspect rooms, handle guest requests and coordinate with the front office. Plan them separately and use this calculator only for the staff who actually clean.
