Why hotels need a Fire NOC
A Fire No Objection Certificate confirms that the state fire and emergency service has inspected your building and is satisfied with its fire safety arrangements. For hotels it is one of the most important approvals: guests sleep in unfamiliar rooms, kitchens use gas and banquet halls hold large crowds. A valid Fire NOC is often needed for the trade licence, bar licence, tourism registration, bank loans and insurance, and some OTAs and corporate clients ask for it too.
What decides your requirements
- Building height. Under the National Building Code (NBC), buildings 15 m and above are high-rise, which typically means sprinklers, wet risers, fire lifts and voice evacuation.
- Floors and floor area. More floors mean more staircases, risers and fire water storage.
- Kitchen fuel. LPG cylinders, LPG banks and piped gas each need their own safety arrangements.
- Assembly areas. Banquet halls and restaurants need marked capacity, extra exits and fire-retardant décor.
Each state applies its own Fire Services Act and rules, so the same hotel can have slightly different requirements in two states. Treat this tool as a preparation list and confirm the details with your local fire office or a licensed fire consultant.

Keep it valid
Fire NOCs usually have to be renewed periodically, and inspectors check whether systems actually work, not just whether they exist. Service extinguishers on schedule, test alarms and pumps, keep escape routes clear and run mock drills. Record every drill with the fire drill report format, and track other approvals with the hotel license checklist. This is general guidance, not legal advice.

Frequently asked questions
Is a Fire NOC mandatory for small hotels?
It depends on your state. Many states require a Fire NOC for hotels above a certain height, floor area or number of rooms, and some ask for it for all lodging buildings. Check with your state fire service.
What is a high-rise building for fire safety?
The National Building Code treats buildings of 15 m and above as high-rise. They need stronger systems such as sprinklers, wet risers and fire lifts. State rules may add their own conditions.
How often must a hotel Fire NOC be renewed?
Renewal periods vary by state and building type. Note the validity on your certificate, keep systems maintained and apply for renewal before it expires.
